Somatic Experiencing (SE)
Somatic Experiencing (SE) is a body‑oriented approach to trauma healing that will help you reconnect with your body’s natural ability to regulate, recover, and move toward balance. Instead of focusing only on thoughts and narratives, SE gently guides you to notice physical sensations, impulses, and patterns in your nervous system. These subtle cues often hold important information about how past experiences have shaped your body’s responses to stress.
SE was founded by Dr. Peter Levine, whose book, Waking the Tiger, introduced the idea that trauma is not defined by the event itself, but by how the nervous system responds and becomes stuck. His work highlights the body’s innate ability to heal when given the right conditions- safety, pacing, and attuned support. Many people find this approach especially helpful when traditional talk therapy hasn’t fully addressed what they feel physically, or when trauma shows up as chronic tension, overwhelm, or shutdown.
By increasing awareness of body sensations, SE supports the gradual release of stress and trauma that may be stored in your body. This process helps the nervous system complete unfinished survival responses, settle activation, and build greater capacity to stay grounded during challenging moments. Over time, many people experience more resilience, emotional steadiness, and a deeper sense of well‑being.
I have completed several years of intensive training to become a Somatic Experiencing Practitioner (SEP). This advanced training supports me in helping clients navigate trauma with attunement, clarity, and respect for the body’s natural rhythms and wisdom.
Somatic Experiencing can be offered in-person at our West Edmonton location or virtually for Anyone residing in Alberta!
